When you're just getting home from hospital, it's hard to go past the convenience of an all-in-one.

When using AOIs (or pockets), a liner inside the nappy (not the pocket) aids fit on a newborn.

Velcro waistbands can be quite stiff and scratchy. Complex poppers sizing systems can be hard to get your head around.

Sized systems can be variable on a newborn - most XS, S sizes are great, but the Mother-ease small seemed too big. One-size systems generally seemed too large and bulky.

NEWBORN
This is the nappy given to use in the hospital to use, and what we had at home in bulk as the starter or default product. It seems to be the most popular, at least the most ubiquitous, product on the market.
Huggies are light, easy to use, very absorbent, easy to fasten and generally highly functional. It is the benchmark product against which to measure other products.
We are using them for night-time when we hope bub will be encouraged to take a longer nap.
The only downside is that it can be difficult to tell if baby has weed - if you are an anxious parent counting daily wees!

NEWBORN
Chosen due to to its smaller size, which fitted easily onto our newborn. The nappy was soft and absorbent. We didn't use it with a Mother-ease cover as the other Mother-ease products are sized small, but were far too big (long in the torso) to use. We used the Loveybum's wool cover instead, which fitted over OK.
After washing, the nappy still had some stains, so we will review the care instructions and try again.

NEWBORN
Used with the BB hemp fitted nappy, which is the 'fattest' combination tried so far. The wool cover didn't appear to be very well lanolised, but the nappy underneath was quite wet, but there was no leakage or smell through the cover. The cover felt a bit 'humid' where you could feel moisture but there was no leakage or smell. Small was generous on the newborn, but OK over the one-sized nappy.

NEWBORN
Definitely one of the most attractive nappies in terms of being soft and easy to distinguish with the rainbow trim. It's quite large and bulky for a newborn. After fiddling with the poppers, husband got it to fit OK but is very bulky even when used with just a single liner. We have been removing liners from the AOIs/ pockets and have found it better when they're included - the reverse could be true with a two-layer system where, since the nappy is fully absorbent, an additional liner is not needed. Tried with the BB wool cover.

NEWBORN
I chose this nappy as the first product to trial, because of its softness inside and out, and it was a smaller fit suitable for a newborn. On first use, there was some leakage out of the top of the nappy (when used without the snap-in liner). At the next use, we will include the liner to see if that prevents leakage.

NEWBORN
I initially didn't choose this for a newborn, as the sizing seemed too large - but my husband picked it up (we have used a lot of AOIs to start our trial) and made it fit.
The inserts are sewn in, which makes the whole unit somewhat cumbersome, a removable system would be preferrable for flexibility in using the product (day/night) and sizing.

Tricky to adjust the popper sizes for newborn and results in some grizzling by the test subject. Used without stuffing or liners, will use next time with single (newborn) liner. Will check the instructions for adjusting the poppers and liners. Seems like a good one-size choice, when you get the hang of it.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
One of my favourite products 'out of the box' as it's beautifully soft and lanolised really well (better than the Baby Beehinds).

NEWBORN
Used over a Sandy's nappy and worked well. Although the nappy was soaked, there were no leaks and the cover was not wet and did not smell. Honestly, I was skeptical about wool covers, but this one did as promised.

We purchased the "silly monkeys" pattern, which is hard to resist. The tops are quite stiff, but husband persevered in getting it on. We used the liner/ booster from a different brand, which worked well - will try with the HH liner next time.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
A favourite of my husband, who loves the vibrant colours and 'mink' texture.
The website lists a number of versions/ configurations of the product which are very difficult to understand. In the end, I got the Snap In One with microfibre insert, as the hemp was not available .... I think!

NEWBORN
Used with a single insert, after we've learned by trial-and-error that a single insert (for nappies that have them in the design) improves the fit on a newborn (apart from being more absorbent).
After use the poly lining was pristine, but the insert needed extra cleaning.

NEWBORN
Good product for newborns (see also Bum-Ware AIO) and performed well. This version of the product doesn't have a pocket, snap-in liner or other boosters (hence the quick-dry) so is limited in terms of how much is can soak up.

One of my choices was not available, so I received an email from Cotton Bottom advising me and they were helpful and friendly. Unfortunately I got a credit note, not a refund, for the very small price difference. With such a large range, it will be easy to buy again.
